White Rock Community Center 10488 White Rock Road Rancho Cordova, CA 96741 Meeting cost includes program and a light breakfast/morning snack, coffee (Keurig—feel free to bring your own pods!), water, and tea. Check-in begins at 9:30 a.m. Program begins at 10:00 a.m. and typically ends by 12:30
This presentation will cover several legal topics of importance to authors, including basic contracts they might encounter (and terms that should raise red flags), the basics of copyright protection, and how to enforce their rights, particularly in the face of rampant plagiarism and pirating websites that plague the internet. The presentation will include a tutorial on how to file DMCA takedown notices and guidance on when authors should seek out the assistance of an attorney. If time permits and the audience desires, the presentation will also cover how to register a copyright and obtain an ISBN for self-published works.
There will be plenty of time for questions, but keep in mind that Jackie cannot offer specific legal advice to individual authors as part of the Q&A session, so please keep questions general or hypothetical, or focused on commonly known public issues or properties (e.g., Harry Potter fanfic or #CockyGate).
